    This document evaluates the early success of the Northern Wetbelt Silvicultural Systems Project, a long-term study comparing how different logging methods affect forest health in east-central British Columbia. Researchers analyzed initial survival rates of planted spruce and cedar alongside the frequency of wind damage to residual trees across various harvest intensities, ranging from clearcuts to partial-retention systems. Their preliminary findings indicate that seedling survival is exceptionally high across all sites, while the risk of trees snapping or uprooting increases moderately as more of the surrounding forest canopy is removed. By providing baseline climate data and specific monitoring recommendations, the document serves as a foundational assessment to guide sustainable forest management and ecological restoration in the interior cedar-hemlock subzones.

    This extension note investigates recent changes in aboveground live-tree carbon within spruce and fir-dominated sub-boreal forests in the interior of British Columbia. The study specifically re-evaluated carbon stocks between 20032004 and 2018 at the Aleza Lake Research Forest to understand how carbon storage is impacted by tree species and size. The authors found that while younger forest stands generally accumulated carbon, older stands with larger trees showed a decline in aboveground live-tree carbon, largely due to increased mortality of these large trees. This highlights a critical concern regarding the role of mature forests in carbon sequestration amidst accelerating climate change and increasing tree mortality rates.

    This document introduces an innovative old-growth index developed to accurately measure and track the ecological value of forests, especially those prone to disturbances. Moving beyond traditional age-based definitions, the researchers used Aerial Laser Scanning (ALS) and field data to create a more comprehensive metric that considers diverse structural attributes like tree size, deadwood, and canopy complexity. The study's application in British Columbia's Chinook Community Forest revealed that "very-high" old-growth value forests are scarce and fragmented, often located outside designated protected areas. This research provides a flexible and robust framework for forest managers to better conserve and monitor these vital ecosystems and their services, aiding in more effective landscape-level planning.

    The Aleza Lake Research Forest is a 9000 ha university-based outdoor research facility and working forest 60 km east of Prince George, BC. The mandate of the Research Forest is to provide research and education facilities and opportunities to the University of Northern BC and other institutes, universities, government agencies, private sector research, schools and other educational groups with regards to ecosystem and resource management studies within the wet sub-boreal spruce biogeoclimatic zone. The research and education programs are multidisciplinary with an emphasis on: Partial cut harvest systems, Biological Diversity, Climate Change and Environmental Monitoring in Small Forest Tenures. The Aleza Lake Research Forest provides a location for field research and education, and also facilitates the development, implementation and evaluation of research and education programs with the user groups.

    John Prince Research Forest (JPRF) is a unique institution, envisioned, initiated and managed cooperatively between Tl'azt'en First Nation and the University of Northern British Columbia. Developing innovative approaches to natural resource conservation and management that combines First Nations' traditional and western scientific approaches to understanding the natural world, is what makes John Prince Research Forest special. Located in the dry sub-boreal spruce biogeoclimatic zone of the Nechako Plateau, the northernmost subdivision of BC' s Central Interior Plateau. The JPRF falls within the moist interior natural disturbance unit, characterized by large wild fire stand replacement events typically on a 100-200 year cycle. The natural forest types are an uneven-aged mix of Douglas-fir, spruce, pine, subalpine and deciduous types. These highly productive northern forests have distinctive understories of rose, spirea, soopallie, cranberry, thimbleberry, red osier dogwood, black twinberry, devil's club and huckleberry varieties.
